reduction in floor sawdust accumulation with a retrofitted dust collection system
Results from the work
design conflicts identified and resolved through Navisworks clash detection
reduction in drawing retrieval time with a master drawing database
smaller footprint from consolidating industrial electrical components into one system
About Ali
I'm a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Waterloo with co-op experience in manufacturing engineering, building-services design and mechatronics. My work spans CNC commissioning, pneumatic and mechanical design in Inventor and SolidWorks, Revit and Navisworks coordination, and fabrication-ready drawings. I like getting hands-on with 3D printing and prototyping, and I iterate on designs until they work on the shop floor.
Three roles
Manufacturing Engineering Intern
- Commissioned a CNC coping machine and configured 20+ programs to automate a manual milling and drilling process
- Designed and installed a retrofitted dust collection system in Inventor, optimizing clearances and mounting geometry to reduce floor sawdust accumulation by 75%
- Revised a pneumatic brake control circuit for a frame roller transport table, sourcing 14 unique pneumatic components to enable independent operator control from both stations
- Engineered a locating jig for a crimp gun tool to correct a misalignment, validating it through two prototype revisions before committing to a UHMW production version
- Designed a terminal reader mount in Inventor and outsourced fabrication of the assembly, reducing reading time by 75%
Mechanical Designer Co-op
- Performed clash detection in Navisworks, identifying and resolving 20+ design conflicts between mechanical, electrical and structural systems to prevent construction delays and rework
- Developed a master drawing database with version control in Excel, reducing retrieval time by 90% and improving team project oversight
- Coordinated HVAC, plumbing and RCP layouts in Revit with multi-disciplinary teams, reducing design inconsistencies by 15%
Mechatronics Engineering Intern
- Designed a motor–generator mounting frame in SolidWorks and produced 5+ fully dimensioned, fabrication-ready welding drawings, enabling mechanical–electrical system integration
- Consolidated 3+ industrial electrical components into a unified electromechanical system using SolidWorks and Altium Designer, eliminating redundancies and reducing footprint by 20%
- Designed and FDM 3D printed a custom electrical enclosure for a vacuum pump in SolidWorks, protecting internal components and enabling integration into the final assembly
Selected projects
Custom Quadcopter Drone
- Selecting a motor, ESC and flight controller stack for a custom quadcopter, balancing thrust and budget constraints
- Designing an FDM-printed frame to a standard mounting pattern
Keychain Phone Holder
- Designed and printed a compact keychain phone stand in SolidWorks, iterating on hinge clearances, pin-fit tolerances and slot geometry across 3+ print cycles
